Weekly Events
Saturday Academy – Training center 07:30 most Saturdays: preflight training and weather brief for HRS members, then up to the gliderport for lessons, checkout, solo, and exploratory flights all day.
Ground School & Simulator Practice 17:30 – 20:30 each Thursday evening - Training center: free FAA and SSA Bronze Badge ground school and simulator practice for HRS members.
Annual Events
Annual meeting of the board: Saturday, February 5th, 17:00. Dinner to follow at 18:00. Location: training center, 1784 May St, Hood River. Will vote on new board. All members are encouraged to attend.
Annual safety meeting: Saturday, March 7, 10:00 – 13:00. Attendance is mandatory for anyone wanting to fly with HRS or participate in field operations this calendar year. The public is also encouraged to attend; please contact us for at the link above for information.
Northwest Aviation Conference February 21-22, 2026 Washington State Fairgrounds, Puyallup, Washington. In concert with the Seattle Glider Council and Puget Sound Soaring Club, we have invited a small number of juniors to attend as co-presenters of glider seminars at this event and highly encourage HRS members and others to attend one or both days of the event. Please come prepared to canvas the event in an effort to attract new and experienced pilots, junior and adult, to attend our seminars and come by the glider booth to talk about soaring as both an avocation and as an efficient and effective gateway to a lifetime of aviation.
Alaska Airlines Aviation Day May 9, 2026 Alaska Airlines aviation career exploration day, Horizon Airlines maintenance hangar at Portland airport, where we join forces with Willamette Valley Soaring Club to represent soaring education. We will invite a few of our advanced junior members to attend as volunteers and organize a regular attendee group of HRS members and friends. Stand by for the exact date and time when we get this from Alaska Airlines.
Seattle Glider Council Ephrata "Dust-Up" Memorial Day weekend. Spring glider cross-country kickoff event in Ephrata, Washington. Check the SGC website and stand by for details on organization of an HRS cohort attendance with gliders. This even requires SGC membership. Stand by for the SGC signup link when they provide it to us.
HRS/SSA/SGC Cross-Country Academy 2026 – June 28 through July 5, 2026, Ephrata, Washington. National-caliber and nationally-celebrated cross-country development camp. Following on the success of our inaugural event in 2024 that attracted national attention, come learn to fly cross-country in a glider, bring your own glider to practice cross-country or earn badges, or bring your mentor skills to share with others. While this is particularly attractive to junior pilots due to the strong SSA sponsorship of juniors, and dual gliders with mentors will be provided for junior attendees, the camp is also open to adults wanting to bring their own gliders to practice or learn cross-country or that want to bring their own mentor and two-place glider for cross-country training. The SSA pays for tows for all junior flights, and all meals and daily training seminars are included in the registration. This event requires SSA and SGC membership.

HRS Primary Glider Camp-at the Hood River gliderport. These combine ground school and glider flight training for aspiring glider pilots. Come begin glider lessons, progress toward your first solo flight or checkride, or work on your glider add-on rating. Note: these events require HRS membership and pre-camp ground operations training sessions at Hood River Soaring. Contact us at the link at the top of this page if you are interested.
